The major drawbacks to converting your AR-15 into a full auto weapon are: 1) You need a parts kit that may not be available locally; 2) It's always handy to have extra magazines; 3) It can be expensive; and 4) The ATF (Bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives) does not approve such conversions. If you consider these factors, then it's very clear that conversion is not for everyone. Now this is just about the simplest, quickest, cheapest and most fool-proof way to convert your standard AR-15 into a full auto weapon. That's why we chose it as our cover article. Step 1: The first step involves getting the necessary parts. These parts are more easily obtained if you can find an AR-15 parts kit. You'll also need a complete upper receiver, including the ejection port cover with its spring and pin; plus a bolt carrier assembly with charging handle. You will also need a "selector" switch, a disconnector and a "full auto" buffer tube assembly which will include the buffer and spring. Finally, you will need a good stock with a good buffer tube. Step 6: Next, install the buffer and spring into the full auto tube assembly. Make sure that this is properly "staked" in place so there is no movement of parts when you fire! It's probably easier to do this after installing your stock, otherwise it can be difficult to get into place in time for shooting. Step 7: Lastly, install your selector switch into the proper position for firing in semi-auto and full-auto (set at "9" in our example, but it could be any position).
